The path into developing and performing stand up comedy can be challenging for teenagers as they face extra logistical hurdles outside of those of simply creating the material and honing their skills.
The Lincoln Lodge has created The Young Comedian a five-week course for teenagers ages 13-18 looking to learn the fundamentals of stand-up comedy and get valuable tips about how and where to pursue performance opportunities. The syllabus utilizes writing exercises, on-stage performance and group discussion amongst a class of supportive, like-minded young people.
The curriculum is designed and taught by C.J. Toledano, one of Chicagos youngest and funniest working comedians. While performing at clubs nation wide he was a finalist in the 2006 Pittsburgh's Funniest Comedian Contest and in 2007 he was recuited to the cast of The Lincoln Lodge...all while still in college. In 2009 he was recognized as an ascendant talent of note by Time Out Chicago magazine.
The five weekly sessions of the course, lasting two hours each, will focus on joke structure, finding an attitude and persona, connecting with the audience, topical humor, and creating a cohesive set. The course will culminate in a student showcase at the Lincoln Lodge, and provide students with an opportunity to perform in front of a live audience.
